Bornite

A sulfide “pod,” 4 cm in diameter, consisting mostly of bornite and chalcopyrite rimmed by magnetite and hematite. The surface of the pod has been sawn and polished to better show the textural relations among the sulfide minerals. The matrix rock is dark grayish green to almost black and is an altered, apparently chloritic gneiss, schistose in part. This is specimen GS225 of Stephen Sanford and is part of the extensive “geologic series” of his collection.
