Gypsum

This specimen, from the extensive slag piles of the Palmerton smelter of the New Jersey Zinc Company in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, is included here for comparison to specimen GYP11. Most of the left third of this sample is zincite, deposited as crusts and small, spiky crystals from hot vapors circulating through the slag shortly after it was dumped and started to cool. The pale gray coating on the right two-thirds is gypsum (see photo GYP9b). This is one of several examples of gypsum associated with smelter zincite in the Franklin Mineral Museum and bears catalog number FMM-7934.
